  • Regional Transit Project HIA
    Client: San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG)
    Working with Human Impact Partners to conduct SANDAG's first Health Impact Assessment and to develop HIA tools and train staff and partners.
  • Seniors, Sidewalks, and the Centennial
    Client: City of Chula Vista
    A project to engage the City's seniors and disabled residents and develop recommendations for pedestrian improvements and policies that will improve their mobility, safety and health.
  • Injury Prevention and Smart Growth
    Client: Safe States Alliance, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
    Developing a toolkit for the national Safe States Alliance and conducting a training with injury prevention public health professionals on how to promote safe, healthy, and active transportation plans and policies with state, regional, and local transportation agencies.
  • Colina Park Community Vision for Redevelopment
    Client: Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and Proyecto Casa Saludables
    SHCC recently helped a grassroots Latino organization educate and build resident capacity to advocate for equitable development and prepared a report on the community’s vision for three redevelopment sites in this culturally diverse community of San Diego.
  • Chula Vista Safe Routes to School*
    Client: WalkSanDiego
    Worked with the City of Chula Vista and a community “healthy eating, active communities” coalition to improve walkability around schools in two low income neighborhoods. SHCC facilitated a bi-lingual community planning process; prepared a report with policy and traffic calming recommendations; and helped identify funding streams and other implementation opportunities. The project helped the city and school district obtain a $1.5 million Caltrans SR2S grant.
  • Healthy General Plans Campaign*
    Client: County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency
    Developed an approach for the agency on how to encourage and support the adoption of healthy plans and policies by San Diego’s local and regional governments.
  • Boyle Heights Walkable Neighborhoods for Seniors
    Client: Los Angeles County Department of Public Health
    SHCC prepared a community plan for improving pedestrian safety and access for older adults in this low-income, Latino community of Southeast Los Angeles. Involved conducting community education and outreach; analyzing health, injury and traffic data; and leading community workshops and walk audits.
  • City of San Diego Pedestrian Master Plan*
    Client: City of San Diego
    Served as the public health expert on the consultant team that developed the City of San Diego’s Citywide Implementation Framework for their first Pedestrian Master Plan. SHCC prepared plan sections that address health and safety; helped craft health-related goals and public health criteria for use in prioritizing pedestrian projects; and conducted community outreach and education.

  • California Local Public Health and Built Environment (LPHBE) Program
    Client: California Department of Public Health, Safe and Active Communities Branch
    SHCC helped develop and has been engaged for the past five years in implementing the LPHBE program, a statewide effort to build local public health agencies’ capacity to promote healthy built environments. SHCC conducted LPHBE trainings statewide and developed resources and tools for public health professionals.
  • Health and Regional Transportation Planning in Hawaii
    Client: Hawaii Department of Health (DOH)
    SHCC led a health/built environment training with the Hawaii DOH, Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (OMPO), and key community partners and provided technical assistance with proposed health-based policies and priorities in OMPO’s transportation plans.
  • Healthy Planning Collaboration Forums
    Clients (partial list): King County, CA; Solano County, CA; Sacramento County, CA; Fresno County, CA; Ventura County, CA; and Kittitas County, WA.
    SHCC has conducted numerous forums and roundtable discussions that bring together health, planning, transportation, and community partners to develop collaborative approaches to healthy planning.
  • Public Health’s Role in Land Use Planning
    Client: National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO)
    SHCC conducted a series of national focus groups with public health officials and community design professionals to identify roles, barriers and opportunities for integrating health into planning and transportation. Developed the first national reports to guide health officials on their role and strategies for promoting healthy planning.
  • Health and Built Environment White Paper
    Client: County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention
    SHCC developed a white paper that provided the agency with a rationale and process for bringing health concerns to the local planning process.

  • HEAC Coalition Sustainability and Transition Plan
    Client: County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, South Region
    SHCC facilitated a community “healthy eating, active communities” coalition in developing a Charter and Two-Year Roadmap that redefined their mission and organizational structure and provided an action plan for sustainability. We are now developing a funding strategy and grant templates for the coalition.
  • Hawaii Health and Built Environment Working Group
    Client: Hawaii Department of Health
    Facilitating a new agency-wide working group, SHCC helped the Hawaii Department of Health identify areas for cross-programmatic collaboration to promote healthy land use and transportation planning in the state.
  • County of San Diego Childhood Obesity Initiative (COI)
    Client: County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency
    SHCC facilitated development of COI’s Government Domain – a committee of representatives from health, planning departments, and stakeholder organizations - and led the group in identifying policy targets and opportunities for collaboration around healthy planning. SHCC also developed a set of strategic next steps for HHSA.
  • Child Injury and Traffic Safety Strategic Plan
    Client: University of California, Irvine, Child Injury & Traffic Safety Research Group
    SHCC facilitated development of the organization’s first strategic plan, including the expansion into new areas of community collaboration and applied research.
  • Traffic Safety and the Built Environment
    Client: University of California Berkeley, Safe Transportation Research and Education Center
    SHCC provided the Center with technical input into their direction and activities in the intersecting areas of physical activity, traffic safety, land use, and transportation.
  • Public Health Policy and Built Environment Plan
    Client: County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, South Region
    SHCC facilitated development of a plan for the agency’s south regional office that will guide their work in promoting healthy policies and environments with local cities.
